Dota 2 Ranks Explained: MMR, Medals & Calibration

Dota 2 has eight ranks, from Herald to Immortal. MMR means Matchmaking Rating: the number used to estimate your skill for ranked matchmaking. Your medal is the visible tier; Rank Confidence describes how certain the system is about your rating. They tell you different things.

All Dota 2 Ranks in Order, With MMR

The order is Herald, Guardian, Crusader, Archon, Legend, Ancient, Divine, then Immortal. The first seven medals have five stars each. Read the figures below as estimated brackets, not official Valve promotion requirements.

The last Divine tier is open-ended here. Immortal is the highest medal, but a Top 1,000 badge is a regional position, not a separate fixed MMR bracket. For numbered standings, use Valve’s Dota 2 leaderboards.

How Dota 2 MMR and Rank Confidence Work

MMR estimates skill. Rank Confidence measures the system’s certainty about that estimate. Valve introduced Glicko matchmaking in the New Frontiers update on April 20, 2023. A win or loss can change your rating by a different amount depending on the match and the players’ ratings and confidence.

MMR + medal

Your rating and its visible rank tier. Use current MMR to measure the gap to a target; check the client for your actual medal.

Rank Confidence

How much evidence the system has for your rating. It can decline during inactivity. It is not your win rate or the percentage of a medal you have completed.

How Dota 2 Calibration Works

Calibration now uses confidence rather than a fixed ten-match checklist. A medal normally appears around 30% Rank Confidence. If you return after a long break, the system may need more matches before showing a stable rank. Recalibration is not a free upgrade: the result can be higher or lower.

Dota 2 MMR per win is not a fixed reward

Do not plan every match as +25, +30 or another guaranteed number. Use your own recent gains and losses when you plan a target.

How to Unlock Ranked Matchmaking in Dota 2

New accounts need 100 hours of eligible match time and an associated phone number before ranked is available. Check the progress shown in the Dota 2 client. Steam’s total app hours include time in menus, so that number alone does not confirm eligibility.

  1. Complete the playtime requirement.Use the ranked access counter in-game. Play actual matches; leaving the client open is not a shortcut.
  2. Associate your phone number.Follow the ranked queue prompt. Steam Support explains phone linking and number restrictions.
  3. Play ranked to calibrate. The game estimates your rating as you play. Follow its confidence and eligibility messages, rather than an old “ten games” guide.

Phone linking and playtime unlock the queue; calibration establishes the visible rank. They are separate steps. Account restrictions can also prevent queueing even after the basic requirements are met.

Dota 2 Rank Distribution: What Is the Average Rank?

The middle tracked profile in our OpenDota snapshot is in Archon 3. That is the sample’s median rank, not an exact global average MMR. It describes 8,768,273 tracked profiles retrieved Nov 1, 2026; it does not count every active Dota 2 player.

Dota 2 distribution: exact sample counts and percentages
RankTracked profilesSample share

Legend1,548,45117.66%
Ancient941,71910.74%
Divine538,5986.14%
Immortal344,5183.93%

Every bar uses the same 0–100% scale. Profiles visible to a third-party tracker can differ from the full player population, and OpenDota does not provide the age of every observation. Use the distribution for context, not as a claim that your badge puts you ahead of an exact percentage of all players.

How to Work Toward Your Next Dota 2 Rank

Start with your current rating and the next estimated threshold. For example, 3,000 MMR is 80 below the 3,080 reference for Legend 1. That is an MMR gap, not a promise that a set number of wins will promote you. Losses and variable rating changes still count.

Every medal page shows which heroes win most in that rank and which ones do better there than across all ranks. Our advice: keep a small hero pool, focus on a repeatable lane plan, and review a costly death before queueing again. Your badge does not need a motivational speech.

Dota 2 Ranks & MMR FAQ

How many ranks are there in Dota 2?

Dota 2 has eight rank medals. Herald, Guardian, Crusader, Archon, Legend, Ancient and Divine each have five star levels. Immortal uses a medal and, for eligible players, a regional leaderboard number instead of stars.

What Dota 2 rank is 2,000 or 3,000 MMR?

In this estimated table, 2,000 MMR is Crusader 3 and 3,000 MMR is Archon 5. These are reference brackets; check the medal shown in your Dota 2 client for your actual rank.

What Dota 2 rank is 4,000 or 5,000 MMR?

The reference brackets place 4,000 MMR at Ancient 1 and 5,000 MMR at Divine 2. A round MMR number is not automatically the start of a new medal.

How much MMR do you need for Immortal in Dota 2?

Immortal sits above Divine. This table leaves Divine 5 at 5,420+ rather than treating a community estimate as a guaranteed promotion cutoff. A numbered Immortal place is separate: it depends on the regional leaderboard and eligibility rules.

Does Dota 2 reset MMR every ranked season?

There is no fixed six-month reset date in the current ranked system. Valve made resets optional in 2020 and introduced Glicko calibration in April 2023. Dota Plus content seasons are not the same thing as a forced MMR reset.

How many calibration games do you need in Dota 2?

There is no fixed match count under Glicko. Calibration depends on Rank Confidence, with a medal normally appearing around the 30% threshold. Your account history matters, so another player’s match count is not a promise for your account.

Does Turbo change your ranked Dota 2 MMR?

No. Turbo is an unranked mode. Use ranked matches to change ranked MMR; a Turbo win streak does not move your ranked medal.
