Dota 2 items explained: what gets bought, what wins and how to read the numbers
Dota 2 has 182 shop items and 37 neutral items. The most bought item above the component tier is Blink Dagger, in 99% of ranked matches. The highest win rate among items with real sample size belongs to Divine Rapier at 86.6%, the lowest to Diadem at 14.2%. All numbers come from 2.1M ranked all-pick matches scanned by Dota2Arena and count the inventory at the end of the game.
How to read item win rates
An item's win rate is the share of games won by players who held it when the game ended. That makes it a different animal from a hero win rate. Expensive late-game items are bought by players who are already ahead, so they come with high win rates no matter how good they are. Cheap early items are held at the end mostly by players who never got further, so their win rates look bad. The useful comparisons are between items of a similar price and purpose, which is why every item page has a "compare" box for its shop category.
- Items that were sold, consumed or replaced during the game do not count. Only the final inventory and the neutral slot do.
- "In % of matches" counts matches with at least one copy of the item across all ten players, so staples like boots are near the top by definition.
- Hero pages show the same data from the other side: which items a hero ends with and how it does with each of them.
Boots: the one purchase every hero makes
Every hero buys boots, so the interesting question is which upgrade. The table shows how often each boots item is in a final inventory and how the games with it went.
| Boots | In % of matches | Win rate | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 97% | 48.2% | 1,400 | |
| 93% | 48.4% | 1,500 | |
| 87% | 50.7% | 1,450 | |
| 69% | 48.8% | 900 | |
| 57% | 57.4% | 2,500 | |
| 37% | 36.6% | 500 | |
| 30% | 61.6% | 4,450 | |
| 11% | 66.0% | 4,225 |
Big-ticket items: which luxury purchases pay off
Items from 4,000 gold upwards decide late games. Their win rates are all high for the reason above, so compare them with each other: the gap between the best and the worst of this list is the real signal.
| Item | Cost | Win rate | Games |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5,600 | 86.6% | 90,534 | |
| 6,800 | 70.9% | 61,277 | |
| 6,800 | 70.4% | 241,992 | |
| 6,800 | 70.2% | 410,023 | |
| 5,125 | 69.0% | 626,143 | |
| 5,975 | 68.8% | 252,310 | |
| 6,250 | 68.7% | 746,361 | |
| 4,000 | 68.4% | 129,162 |
How the shop is organised
The shop on the right mirrors the in-game shop. Basics holds consumables, attribute items, basic equipment, miscellaneous items and the secret shop, all of which are bought as they are. Upgrades holds everything that is assembled from components: accessories, support items, magic, armour, weapons and artifacts. Neutral lists the items that drop from neutral creeps by tier; they cannot be bought, only found, so they have no price and are counted from the neutral slot only. Every tile links to the item's own page with its recipe, its buyers and its numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Which Dota 2 item is bought most often?
Blink Dagger is in 99% of ranked matches in our window, counting items from 500 gold upwards. Cheaper consumables and components are bought more often but rarely stay in the final inventory.
Which item has the highest win rate?
Divine Rapier leads with 86.6% across 90,534 games. A high item win rate usually means the item is bought in games that are already going well, so it is a signal of a late-game or luxury purchase rather than a secret to winning.
How are item statistics counted?
We count the six inventory slots and the neutral slot at the end of every ranked all-pick match our scanner stores. An item that was bought and later sold or consumed does not count. "In % of matches" is the share of matches in which at least one player ended with the item.
Where do the item descriptions and prices come from?
Names, descriptions, stat values, cooldowns and prices come from Valve's public Dota 2 item data and update when the game does. The statistics next to them come from our own scanner and update daily.
